Adaptation or Extinction?
With today’s fossil fuel consumption and deforestation, the atmospheric CO2 will continue to increase, and the ocean will continue to be acidified. The future of coral reefs is looking bleak at this rate, along with the vast number of other marine animals inhabiting the coral reefs. Though the potential for adaptation to these changing conditions is not well known, there is evidence that the impact of ocean acidification will vary from species to species, with both winner and losers (Doney et al. 2009). Whether the clownfish will be on the winning or losing spectrum of this ecological battle is yet to be determined.
